It’s Municipal Awareness Week! For the next week, we will be sharing information on what the Town of Middleton does as municipal government and highlighting different areas of municipal government and sharing more about the work that happens behind the scenes to support our community.
Monday, May 11:
Municipal government plays a major role in the services and infrastructure people rely on every single day - often behind the scenes. From the water you drink and the roads you drive on, to snow clearing, parks, infrastructure projects, planning, and public spaces, municipalities help keep communities running.
In Middleton, Town staff, Council, and regional partners work together to support the day-to-day operations that help make our community safe, connected, and functional year-round.
Tuesday, May 12:
Ever wonder how decisions get made at Town Hall? From identifying community needs to public input, Council discussions and implementation - there’s a full process behind every project, policy and budget decision.
Municipal government is about more than what you see on the surface. It’s planning, research, accountability, public engagement and working together to keep our community moving forward.
Transparency matters and so does your voice.
Wednesday, May 12:
Today, we’re highlighting just some of the work happening behind the scenes at Town Hall every single day. From maintaining infrastructure and monitoring water systems to planning events, preparing reports, supporting development, managing budgets, and keeping residents informed - municipal government plays a role in many of the services people rely on daily.
A lot happens behind the scenes to help keep Middleton running smoothly - often in ways people never see.

Ever wonder which level of government is responsible for what?
Today, we're highlighting the different roles of federal, provincial, and municipal governments, and how they work together to support communities across Canada.
Municipal governments are the closest level of government to residents and are responsible for many of the day-to-day services people rely on locally, from roads and water services to parks, recreation, and community planning.

As Municipal Awareness Week comes to a close, we wanted to highlight the people and departments working behind the scenes every day to help keep Middleton running smoothly.
From recreation programs and community events, to financial planning, communications, infrastructure, water systems, and day-to-day operations - municipal government involves many moving parts, and every department plays an important role in supporting our community.

Voting List Information for the Special By-Election

The Town of Middleton has created the first version of the voter list (also known as the Preliminary Electors List) for the Municipal Special By-Election happening on June 13, 2026.
If you live in Middleton and are eligible to vote, you should check to make sure your name is on the voter list and that your information is correct.
If your name is missing or something needs to be fixed (like your address), you can contact the Returning Officer by:

Lyme Disease Awareness Month Proclamation

Mayor Gail Smith has proclaimed May 2026 as, Lyme Disease Awareness Month.
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about tick-borne illnesses and how to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. In Nova Scotia, ticks are found throughout the province, and the entire province is considered a risk area for Lyme disease.
Early symptoms may include a spreading rash (often called a “bullseye” rash), fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle or joint aches. If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to more serious health complications
Prevention is key:
- Wear long sleeves and light-coloured clothing when outdoors
- Use insect repellent
- Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after being outside
- Remove ticks promptly and properly
If you experience symptoms after a tick bite, contact a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for recovery.

Mayor Gail Smith has proclaimed May 3-9, 2026, as Emergency Preparedness Week in the Town of Middleton.
May 3–9 is Emergency Preparedness Week, a national initiative that encourages individuals, families, and communities to be ready for emergencies.
Whether it’s severe weather, power outages, or other unexpected events, being prepared can make a significant difference.
Simple steps to get prepared:
- Make an emergency plan with your household
- Build a 72-hour emergency kit with essentials like water, food, medications, and flashlights
- Stay informed about local risks and alerts
Taking time now to prepare helps ensure you and your loved ones can respond safely and confidently in an emergency.

Traffic Delays and Sidewalk Closure Happening May 7

Please be advised that construction work will be taking place at the corner of Main Street and Commercial Street. During this time, the right-turn lane on Commercial Street will be closed to traffic, and sidewalks in front of the Credit Union on both Commercial Street and Main Street will be inaccessible.
Traffic delays may occur. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street.
Date: May 7, 2026
Time: Beginning at 10:00am (work is estimated to take around 4 hours)
Affected Areas: Right turning lane on Commercial Street + Sidewalk in front of Credit Union on Commercial Street and Main Street
