Candidate Biographies 2024

ArchibaldJonathan Archibald

My name is Jonathan Archibald.

I have owned a business and lived in Middleton for almost 20 years. I believe town council needs to be more proactive in dealing with the issues the town faces, particularly in the area of policing. Policing has been the #1 issue people want to talk about when they find out that I am running. Council needs to work with the RCMP and our partners in the county to improve policing in our community. Additionally alternatives to the RCMP need to be fully explored and considered, Middleton spends considerably more per-capita on policing than our neighbouring communities and towns of comparable size. Policing accounts for 25% of our budget, we need to ensure we are getting the service we pay for.

Finally, we need to have a growth focus, our tax base is too small to meet the financial demands of a modern municipality. We need to grow that base. Council needs to be more engaged with its business community and work with them in order to grow the town.

These needs and issues have been present for many years, and I want to make council focuses on them.

AtkinsonSylvester Atkinson

Having served as your mayor for 20 years, I thought it was time for a change. Gail Smtih has been a superb Deputy Mayor, and I assured her I wouldn’t run against her. I look forward to serving her as one of the councillors. We have several projects on the go for development in the Town that could possibly double the town’s population in 3-4 years. All factors are going well financially towards the high-risk action plan.

My health, other than my hips, is fine.

I look forward to working with the new mayor and council on your behalf as one of the councillors.

On Oct 19, vote Sylvester Atkinson for council.

BartlettJohn Bartlett

I have lived in Middleton for over 16 years and have been a councillor for the past 6 years.

I am a business owner having owned Bistro 300 , Bistro 404 and currently The Capitol Pub and Capitol at Eden.

Prior to being elected to council I was asked to be the town representative on the board of ADEDA . From this experience and opportunity I was fortunate to be asked to join the Board of The Wharf Rat Rally , serving on this board for 8 years with one term as vice chair . I was on the board of directors for PeopleWorxs , president of the local chamber of commerce and one of the original members of MABA. Since being elected to council I have served on boards and committees as part of my council responsibilities, Police advisory board , planning , vice chair of Annapolice Valley REN LOC and several others. I have worked to keep tax to a minimum, to ensure policing is held accountable , to encourage development in both business and housing and to stand as an example that Middleton is a place you can move to and succeed.

If re-elected I will work as hard as I have for the last 6 years, with the same passion and drive, to make Middleton a welcoming, diverse, safe place to live.

SmithDan Smith

I have been living in Middleton for the past 20 years and operate Balanced Books Accounting Services Limited on Commercial Street. I graduated from Middleton Regional High School in 1983 and from Saint Mary’s University in 1987.

I served on Middleton Town Council from 2008-2016 which included 4 years as Deputy Mayor and all the various committees required.

I have volunteered for many different events and activities in Middleton over the past 20 years including MRHS School Advisory Council, coaching in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program and the Middleton Learn 2 Run Program. More recently you have probably seen me out running the streets of Middleton and surrounding communities several days a week as I am training to run my first marathon next month in Chicago.

I am running for Town Council so I can be your voice at the table. Tell me what is important to you and I will make sure you are heard and responded to. I believe the important areas that need more attention include policing and community safety, economic development and more efficient use of our taxes to improve our roads, sidewalks and underground infrastructure. We need to improve recreation facilities and parks to allow all members of our community to enjoy opportunities to stay physically and mentally healthy. We also need to work harder with our provincial representatives to improve local health care options and affordable housing.

Together we can make Middleton a great place to live, work, and play. Vote Dan Smith in October so I can work to make this happen.
