Middleton One of Four Sites Selected for New Public Housing

Middleton One of Four Sites Selected for New Public Housing
The Town of Middleton is proud to announce that our community has been selected as one of four sites in Nova Scotia set to receive new publicly supported housing under the province’s five-year plan to build 515 new units across the province.
This project marks an important step forward in expanding access to safe, affordable housing for local residents and families. Rent will be based on income, meaning tenants won’t pay more than roughly 30% of their gross income in rent.
“We’re thrilled to see Middleton included in this significant provincial investment,” said Mayor Gail Smith. “This new housing will help meet critical needs in our community and support a stronger, more vibrant Middleton for everyone.”
By creating stable housing options, this development supports Middleton’s growth, strengthens families, and helps local workers stay connected to their communities. The new housing will help address rising demand for affordable homes in the region.
The Town of Middleton is working closely with the province every step of the way and construction could begin in spring of 2026. The Town of Middleton looks forward to keeping the community informed and engaged as this important housing project moves forward.

Middleton Fire Department Honours Fallen Firefighter at National Memorial
Middleton, NS – The Town of Middleton is proud to announce that this past weekend, members of the Middleton Fire Department were honored to attend the 22nd Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony in Ottawa.
Deputy Chief Scott Veinot, Deputy Mayor Gary Marshall (former Deputy Chief of Lawrencetown Fire Department), and Captain Hilliard Ewing, representing the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association, participated in the solemn ceremony, which commemorates firefighters across Canada who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s event held special significance for Middleton, as one of the town’s own heroes, Mr. Harold Edgar Ray, was formally added to the Canadian Firefighters Memorial Wall. Mr. Ray tragically succumbed to injuries sustained while battling a fire in Middleton on April 5, 1930.
Members of the Ray family attended the ceremony to accept an honorary black helmet and memorial medallion on behalf of the late Mr. Ray, adding a deeply personal and emotional element to the occasion. Local Member of Parliament Chris d’Entremont was also present, honoring Mr. Ray’s legacy alongside members of the fire service and the community.
Following the national ceremony, Middleton Fire Department members, town council representatives, and Mayor Gail Smith visited Pine Grove Cemetery in Lower Middleton to pay tribute at Mr. Ray’s gravesite. During this visit, the department unveiled a monument in his honor, commemorating his service and sacrifice within the local community.
“The Town of Middleton is proud that Harold Edgar Ray’s courage and dedication are officially recognized at a national level,” said Mayor Gail Smith. “His legacy as a hero lives on, inspiring both our fire service and our community.”
The Middleton Fire Department continues to honor the memory of all who have served and sacrificed, ensuring their bravery and dedication are never forgotten.
